Why Being Healthy Is Important To A Leader

Becoming A Healthy Leader

One of the most mentioned struggles in my recent reader survey was the struggle of being a healthy leader. Being healthy encompasses many facets of your life. From your mental health to your physical health to your spiritual health.

Seeing as staying or becoming healthy was one of the biggest struggles leaders are facing, I wanted to dedicate March to helping leaders to become healthier in their daily lives.

Today, we’re going to start off with why being healthy is (or should be) important to a leader.

Why Being Healthy Is Important To A Leader

Being healthy should be a priority to everyone, not just leaders. However, I’ve seen leaders struggle with health time and time again.

Because of their busy work schedules, leaders frequently fail to take care of their health. Their focus has been on taking care of business and running it successfully. This leaves little time to look at their health.

Leadership Lessons From My First 25k Run

Have you ever felt like you couldn’t make it? That your body was going to fail? Your legs felt like jello?

That was me on May 12th, 2012.

I decided I would do my first 25K run by participating in the 35th annual 5th 3rd Riverbank Run. For those not familiar with the metric system, that is 15.625 miles in the imperial system. It’s quite the distance.

Through my training and the actual run I learned 4 valuable leadership lessons.

My Take on the Merrell Trail Glove Barefoot Running Shoe

As I was preparing to improve my level of fitness, I heard a lot of talk about barefoot running shoes. Most of the talk revolved around the Vibram FiveFingers.

I was hesitant to purchase the FiveFingers as I was not fond of their appearance.

Then I heard talk about a new shoe. These shoes were made by Merrell and called the Trail Glove.

The Merrell shoes looked like real shoes. There are no toe slots to slip my toes in. And I felt comfortable wearing them in public.

I have not been disappointed in my choice.

The Trail Gloves were designed with trail runners in mind but still work well on concrete.

Here is what I enjoy about the shoe:

The little things add up

Every action you take creates a reaction. It does not matter if the action is big or small. It still has an effect.

With a big action you will most likely see the results of it quickly. Not so with the small actions. Small actions take time for the results to become apparent.

Take shopping for groceries. First, you grab a cart and begin your journey down the aisle. You grab the salsa and into the cart it goes. Next you pick up some ground beef. Then you are onto the dairy section where you grab a gallon of milk.

This continues on for an hour or so as your cart slowly fills with your groceries. Between the grocery items you need, you add a item worth a dollar or two here and there. It is no big deal, you think.

Get Fit To Lead

Ten months ago, I felt that I had lost control of parts of my life. I had gained 30-40 pounds in 6 years. I had become sedentary. I knew something had to change.

When I realized this, I started to make changes to my life. I greatly increased my physical activity. Because of the increase in physical activity, my level of fitness has increased.

I am able to run long distances without becoming winded. I am able to bike extreme distances. I am able to situps and pullups. I am even able to do a couple of one-armed pullups. My wife says that is impressive.

Through this increase in physical activity, I lost more than 40 pounds. I have regained control of my body.
