10 Leadership Lessons From Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

A Reel Leadership Article

Michael Bay is on a roll, releasing quite a few movies this summer. First movie I saw was the new Transformers movie. Now, Bay has released a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.

Leadership lessons from Michael Bay's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2014

With Bay, I always feel you’ve got to go in with an open mind. He does things a bit differently. Bay likes explosions, shooting, and women, it seems. While I haven’t truly been disappointed with a Bay movie lately, there had been some horrible ones (Can we all forget Transformers 2 ever happened?).

And then came the new live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles…

I went in with serious reservations. Could Bay do the Ninja Turtles justice? Would the new Ninja Turtles movie be rubbish? Will the new Ninja Turtles be likable?

After all, I grew up on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They were a childhood favorite.

Go Have Fun

Leaders need to take themselves seriously. Leaders have a lot riding on the respect they have with the teams they lead.

Losing the respect they’ve earned can be a damaging blow a fallen leader may never recover from.

In guarding their respect, many leaders become hardened. They see life as one big job. Maybe they see it as one big masquerade they have to keep up.

However they view life and leadership, they feel they can never let their hair down and have a good time. This is where they’re mistaken.

What Happens When You’re Always On Guard

There’s always someone watching you. That’s a truth of leadership you’ll have to come to grips with.

Wherever you go, you run the possibility of crossing paths with someone you lead, someone you led, or someone you may lead in the future. Knowing this makes you feel the pressure that you need to be on guard all the time.

The Poverty Minded Leader

The thought of poverty stirs up many images in my mind. The homeless man sitting outside of the local Wal-Mart. Tiny Tim in A Christmas Carol. The single mother working two jobs and still not making it work.

And lately my mind has wandered to leaders who are in poverty. Not monetary poverty but a mindset of poverty.

Ever met a poverty minded leader? I think you have and you’ll probably recognize him after this post.

What Is A Poverty Mindset?

Let’s begin with this. What is a poverty mindset? What does it mean and what does it do to you?

A poverty mindset means:

Believing there will never be enough

Someone is always out to get what you have

Seeing life as a constant struggle

Decisions are based on fear
