Catalyst Atlanta 2013 Angela Ahrendts

Note: These are notes from the Catalyst Atlanta 2013. Rough and unedited.

Angela AhrendtsAngela is the CEO of Burberry and Forbes 100 most powerful women.

Ken Coleman is interviewing.

KC: Tell us a bit of your story. How did you ascend to one of the most influential women in business.

Angela Ahrendts: She’s one of six children. Raised with a very spiritual mother and philosophical father. Born a dreamer, often told to take off her rose-colored glasses.

Always dreamed of getting into the fashion industry. Went off to Ball State University where she studied merchandising and marketing.

Got out of school in 3 years, went to New York and live her dream.

KC: Talk about staying true to who Burberry is and moving forward. How do you balance that?

AA: Talk about core values. They always talk about being born from a coat. Meaning heritage of the company.

Catalyst Atlanta 2013 John Piper Session

Note: Draft, notes from Catalyst Atlanta 2013

pastor john piperJohn Piper opens his session with a prayer.

Great to finally see John Piper live.

The Biblical answer to identity has been: A human being, insert your name, is a creature of God with a nature designed by God for conscious displays of God’s greatness and his beauty and his worth.

What we lost is being restored. To make much of God

We were designed by God to display God’s identity. That’s who John is. That’s who I am. That’s who you are.

Genesis 1:27 – Talks about image.

Images are designed to image. You draw attention to the image. That’s the purpose of an image.

Why did God create 7 billion images of Himself? To make Himself known.

He is passionately devoted to filling the world with Himself. We are statues of God.

Catalyst 2013 Atlanta Jason Russell of Invisible Children and Kony 2012

jason russell of invisible childrenJason Russell is the founder of Invisible Children. He played a huge part in the Kony 2012 video that went viral.

Jason was interviewed by ….. of People of the Second Chance.

He learned the hard way you can’t respond to every critic.

He doesn’t remember the actual incident of his naked breakdown. He went through shame and guilt. The let down of your organization, family, and the youth who believed in him.

You have to face the thing you’re known for.

He’s found out that he wasn’t alone. Other people have had breakdowns as well. People have come up to him on the street and talk to him about the situation.

The lesson, he believes, is that we have to be more vulnerable.

Until we become vulnerable, we never become our true selves.

Interview question: How is Jason different now?

Catalyst 2013 Atlanta Malcolm Gladwell Notes

Note: This is my rough notes from the Catalyst Atlanta 2013 event.

malcom gladwellMalcolm Gladwell took the stage after Sleeping At Last played a couple of songs.

He began by sharing people who preach sermons and how he’s always wanted to preach a sermon. He considers this his sermon.

His book David & Goliath just released this week. The book is a story on how we don’t know our own strengths.

To break the deadlock, the Philistines sent out their best warrior, Goliath. Goliath tells the Israelites to send out their best warrior to battle.

No one would come forth to face the giant until David, the shepherd boy, presents himself.

David makes himself known to Saul by laying out his skill-set and how he’s gone to battle as a shepherd.

Goliath sees that it’s a shepherd boy with his staff, and is insulted.

Catalyst Atlanta 2013 Andy Stanley First Session

andy-stanleyAndy Stanley: Known Survivor – Surviving your appetite for known

These are rough notes but I wanted to let you know what’s happening at Catalyst Atlanta.

Everyone has an appetite to be known

If you feed an appetite, it grows

An appetite is never fully or finally satisfied. It always comes back.

The more you get, the more you want. You’ll never have enough retweets, followers, or mentions.

You’ll never say:

My student ministry is big enough

My church has enough attendees

How to survive your appetite to be known

There is no amount of known to satisfy your appetite for known.

We all wanted to be famous with our fathers.

What complicates being known is that we’re leaders

We move on from our fathers and mothers to our coaches and teachers. And then onto that cute girl or guy. Now it’s the people you’re leading.
