Have you been thinking about your career lately? Perhaps it’s a career that you have already somewhat established, or perhaps it’s a career that you are still trying to build the foundations for. Either way, it can be tricky to decide if it’s actually what you want to do, or if it’s just something that you are good at so you thought, why not? In some cases, you may have been pushed into a certain career without giving it much thought as to whether or not it was right for you. But, all of these things matter. In this article, we’re going to be taking a look at some of the things that you need to think about when it comes to your career, so keep reading down below if you would like to find out more.
Are You Qualified?
First, you need to think about whether or not you are qualified for the job title that you are trying to obtain right now. If the answer is yes, then go for it, you have as good a chance as anyone else with your qualification does. However, if the answer is no, then potential employers might overlook you for this reason. You could even have heaps of experience, but some employers are stuck in the ways of needing formal qualifications to offer someone a job. Fair? Probably not, but true nonetheless.
If you’re not qualified but this is the career that you know you want, then the only option you have got is to get qualified. Sometimes all it takes is the right qualification and a lot of hard work, because even though you can probably learn to find exam answers easily, one of the best things you could do here is practice, practice, practice. If you’re going to get qualified don’t just pass; Make sure that you nail it. There are options available here, you don’t have to stop working and go back to school full-time. Part-time courses are available for some classes, so it’s just a case of working out how to fit the two parts of your life together for a little while.
Does It Make You Happy?
Does it make you happy? Does the idea of getting up and going to work get you excited for all the things that you are going to be able to do that day? Will you be able to complete things that make you happy and make you feel good? Will you enjoy the work that waits for you today? If the answer is no to any of these, then why are you in this job and building this career? You should not wake up in the morning and want to hide under the covers because the idea of going to work is that unappealing. You should be excited to get on with the day and face the challenges that it is going to bring you.
Being happy is important, especially when it comes to work. The reason being that we spend over half of our lives working, which is far too much time to be miserable.
Is It What You Want?
If you sit down and really think about it, is this the job that you want and the career that you want to build? If the answer is yes, then this is fantastic and we’re happy for you that you have found something that you want to do, and are actively pursuing it. If the answer is no though, then it’s time to reevaluate the decisions that you have made. The thing that a lot of people forget is that it’s never too late to change your mind, and just because you have spent a long time walking down one path, that doesn’t mean you can’t change directions and go another way.
Often, we think we want one thing, but when we start to achieve it, we find out that it’s not what we wanted at all. It’s absolutely fine to feel this way, as long as you are willing to do something about it. It’s not going to be easy, and it might even be really scary, but you should always be going after what you want in life, and nothing less is enough.
Does It Pay Enough?
You will hear a lot of people say that money doesn’t matter to them in the slightest, and it’s a nice sentiment but it doesn’t always work in theory. You still need to be able to pay all of your bills, clear your debts if you have any and so much more. As such, you need to check that the salary for this job is at least enough to cover your living expenses and leave you with some money for spending and saving.
Or, if you know that money does matter to you, then you need to work on finding a job and career in which you will get paid a fair amount of money. The problem with this for a lot of people is that the super high paying jobs often take years of training and years of education to achieve. If you’ve got the patience and you want to do this, that’s fine, but if you don’t, you might need to lower your expectations a little.
Does It Work With Other Commitments?
Does the career that you are building fit with the timings of your other commitments? For example, if you have a family, then you can’t be at work all the time as you are never going to see them. So, from there you need to be able to work out how many hours you can afford to spend at work, while earning the right amount of money, but without missing out on things with your family. It’s a tough one, we know. Plus, if the job that you really want requires a large time commitment from you, it’s going to be tricky to manage.
It’s true to say that the majority of jobs only require a large time commitment for a short period to get you started, and once this has happened, a lot of the work can be done from home depending on what career you have chosen. If you sit down and talk about this with your family, you may be able to manage it well.
Is It Time For Something New?
It might be time for something new. If you have been thinking about changing jobs within your career, then you can look at options here. For example, you might want to quit working as a nurse in one hospital and join a travel nurse staffing agency. Or, you might want to go all out and change your career entirely if it isn’t working for you anymore. It happens sometimes, and it’s nothing to worry about. Figure out what is best for you, and if something else would make you happier. Put a lot of thought into this, don’t just let it be an off the cuff decision, because it’s extremely important. The results of this decision could change your life and then some, so it’s worth taking your time.
