Truett Cathy was an amazing man. More than the founder of Chick-Fil-A, he was a great leader. Sadly, Truett passed away on Monday.

How Memorizing Quotes Helped Bolster My Leadership

Since I was a freshman in college, I developed a habit that most would find rather unusual. I collected things. It wasn’t your typical collection of stamps, spoons or baseball cards. I’ve been an avid collector of quotes – words spoken or written by leaders who were beyond themselves and left a dent in this universe.

As I look in hindsight, many of these quotes have made an indelible impact in my life, shaping my perspective in life.

For instance, Oscar Wilde was known for saying

Be yourself; everyone else is taken.

When I first encountered this quote, it struck a nerve at me. At that time, I was trying to be someone else. In fact, I was trying to imitate someone I highly admired. The more I tried to fabricate my identity based on imitation, the more I felt empty and inauthentic. Mentor Like Yoda

Yoda is a lovable but tough teacher in the Star Wars universe. He took a young farm boy and helped him become a great Jedi.

We seen Yoda guide and mold the remarkable Luke Skywalker into someone who could take on the formidable Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader (the later he learns was really his father, GASP!).

A recent blog post by Scott Cochrane inspired these. He said it’s a myth that your leadership mentor is Yoda.

Within the post, he gave great reasons on why he is not like Yoda. Especially the idea your leadership mentor will be all knowing (which they never will be).

I think I have to challenge this notion. Your leadership mentor can be like Yoda. In fact, I think YOU should be like Yoda.

Today is the day set aside to honor the late Martin Luther King Jr. He’s the man who helped propel the civil rights movement forward.

According to Wikipedia, he was an American pastor, activist, humanitarian, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. Like many of you, he had lots of titles and roles.
