What Your Team Needs (Motivation!)

Motivating Your Team

I asked in my annual reader survey what some of the biggest challenges leaders were facing. I’ve already covered some of those: Relationships, health, etc… This month, I’m going to cover another topic that was hot on the mind of readers: Motivating your team.

Having and creating a motivated team is something a lot of leaders think about. A motivated team is something leaders desire. They know their organization can be more effective if everyone was excited and ready to work.

Your team needs motivation. You can give it to them.

The truth is, most employees are disengaged. According to a 2014 Gallop study, only 31.5% of employees are actively engaged at work. This means there’s a whopping 68.5% of employees who are either not engaged or actively disengaged with their work.

Those are scary numbers for leaders. Over two-thirds of your workforce may be disengaged from the work you’ve hired them to do.

The Fastest Way To Lose Your Audience

You’ve spent a lot of time and energy on building up an audience. Whether that’s in the office, through a blog, within a church, or another type of organization your work hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Over the years, you’ve gained traction. You’ve seen new readers come to your blog. You’ve seen your business grow. Or maybe you’ve gained more influence within the office environment.

Then something happened. People stopped listening. They stopped following you.

You lost your audience.

Losing Your Audience Sucks

Yeah, you heard me. Losing your audience sucks. Especially after all of the time and energy you put into your work.

You crafted perfect blog posts. You worked your tail off to get where you are. And you rose through the ranks to new heights.

Then it all came crashing down.

Become A Role Model Leader

Okay, you’ve been leading for some time now. You got the lay of the land and you are feeling comfortable as a leader.

What’s next in leadership? The next step is to become a role model leader.

All leaders need a role model

Because of your positional authority, you’re leading multiple people. Each person you’re leading is looking to you for something.

Whether that is guidance in what to do, how to handle difficult situations, or the best way to act, people are looking up to you. Now, it’s time to give them something to look up to.

It’s time you become a Role Model Leader.

How To Become A Role Model Leader

Those 3 words (Role Model Leader) can feel heavy. And they should.

As a leader, you carry a lot of responsibilities on your shoulders. One of those being the fact you are now a role model for others.

Do People Count On You?

If you’re a leader, the answer to this question is: Yes, people count on you.

That’s a cornerstone of leadership. Your team needs to know you’re going to do what you say.

Who's counting on you?

However, we see many cases where leaders aren’t able to be counted on. They’ve left the building.

You’re not that kind of leader. Are you?

I don’t think so. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be actively seeking to improve your leadership skills.

People Are Counting On You

Whether or not you’re doing a good job, people are looking to you for guidance. They want to know you will be there when things hit the fan.

Why?

Because you’re in charge. You’ve stood up and said you want to be the one to show people the way.

And they responded.

They said they TRUST you. They BELIEVE in you. They want to FOLLOW you.

The Battle To Maintain Our Integrity

You’ve probably felt the battle raging within you. To hold onto your beliefs. To boldly proclaim and do what you feel is right.

The world is crying out around you to do that what they believe to be true. All the while trying to pull you to their side and strip away your integrity.

There’s a battle happening. The battle to maintain our integrity while living in a world that beckons us with the desires of others.

Months ago I wrote a blog post with quotes from Nelson Mandela. I also shared leadership quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

While these posts received quite a bit of positive attention, there were also questions regarding the posts. Partially relating to maintaining your integrity while being told to tweet something one of these great men had said.
