How To Conquer A Fear

Fear is a killer of dreams. We will see something that scares us and we’ll turn tail and run or fight.

Psychologists call this the fight or flight mentality. We have an innate desire to get away from scary things.

And yet we all want to get over our fears. We want to know that we’re not ruled by the things that scare us.

But it’s so hard to conquer our fears. Fear tells us we’re not going to make it. Fear tells us we’re going to fail. Fear tells us we’re not good enough.

I’m here to tell you that fear is a liar. Fear can, and must, be conquered.

My Fear

Let me be transparent for a moment. I have fear. Many fears in fact.

One of my biggest fears has been public speaking and creating videos to help others.

How To Overcome Your Doubts

I want to be honest with you. I’ve written frequently on fitness and how leaders should be focused on being fit.

This is something I’ve been utterly horrible at the past year. My running has been infrequent at best. My bathroom exercises pretty much stopped. My motivation was gone.

We doubt our strength when we should embrace it

The more I thought about my failure to run and exercise, the more down on myself I felt. Then, when I’d get back in the game and actually run, I’d begin to feel doubt creep in.

My mind would tell me things like:

You’ll never run as fast as you used to run.

You’ve taken too much time off. It’s better to give up now.

No one cares if you’re out of shape. By the way, isn’t round a shape?

The Day I Almost Died

Or maybe I didn’t almost die. Maybe I just came close to death in my mind. To me, that’s close enough.

So, what happened to make me come so close to death? What could have made me think that my life was going to end?

I thought I had met Death

This near death experience happened while I was ice climbing in Munising.

The day started out like any other ice climbing trip I’d ever been on. We arrived at the frozen waterfall. John, our ice climbing guide, setup the climbing routes. And we began to climb.

Then someone saw a perfect place to explore. There was beautiful ice and a way up behind the frozen waterfall.

My near death experience

Only this quick way up wasn’t so quick for me. Instead, it became a trial of fear and dread and the feeling of death crept upon me.
