Quotes And Leadership Lessons From Turning Red

A Reel Leadership Article

My latest book, Reel Leadership, is now available on Amazon. If you love movies and leadership, you will love this book.

In what has to be one of the most controversial Pixar/Disney movies released in recent history, Turning Red is stirring up controversy. My Facebook feed is full of people concerned about the message sent in this movie.

Many moms complain that the movie teaches disrespect, broaches the topic of periods, and more. A review of Turning Red on CinemaBlend was taken down because of its critique that the film’s audience is too narrow.

What I saw was a fun, animated movie that talks about important subjects. These subjects include coming of age, body changes, and more. This movie can do more for you than almost any other movie when it comes to talking to your children about growing up.

Can Leaders Display Humility?

Yeah, I’m the big shot around here. I built all of this with my two hands and the people I chose to bring in. This was all me, baby…

Grandiose, bravado, supreme confidence…

These are the characteristics most people think of when they think of a leader. The leader takes charge, takes credit, and moves things.

But is that always the case? Are leaders always bragging about themselves, sharing tall tales, and being the center of attention?

I think not.

Instead, I think there is a case to be made for humble leaders.

Today, we will look at a few examples to see how we can become more humble in our leadership. It’s a trait that will serve you well.

Can Leaders Display Humility?

When I think of humility, I think of Jesus Christ. He displayed it throughout the New Testament.

Sail Into The Wind

William Arthur Ward is known for the following quote:

The pessimist complains about the wind
The optimist expects it to change
The realist adjusts the sails.

As I read those lines, I chew the words in my mind. I ask myself the following questions:

  • What good does complaining do? What will it change?
  • If the wind changes, what can I do about that? Will a change in the wind be in my favor or at odds with me? Can I do anything about it?
  • The wind will blow where the wind will blow. How do I harness the power of the wind?

I think that about sums up the three kinds of characters in Ward’s quote. The questions you ask will be the direction your life will go.

Quotes And Leadership Lessons From Psych 3: This Is Gus

A Reel Leadership Article

My latest book, Reel Leadership, is now available on Amazon</a>. If you love movies and leadership, you will love this book.

I remember watching the original Psych television series on the USA Network. I would laugh my head off at the crazy antics of the fake psychic Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez) and his sidekick Burton “Gus” Guster (Dulé Hill).

Shawn and Gus in a funny pose from Psych 3: This Is Gus

Shawn is hyper-observant and has an eidetic memory. He uses these skills to solve crimes and bring justice to those who have been wronged.

Because Shawn has these skills, he can fake being a psychic. He sees something, remembers it, and then pieces it together to make it seem like he has otherworldly abilities.

This leads to hilarity throughout the original series. Shawn continues the fakery throughout Psych 3: This Is Gus as well.
