As I typed out the title for the latest Reel Leadership article, I couldn’t help but want to sing the song It’s a Beautiful Day in This Neighborhood. The title of A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood brings back all sorts of memories.
Yet, A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood won’t tell you the story you were expecting. At least it didn’t for me.
Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers
I was expecting this movie to be about Mr. Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks), his life, and Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood. In A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood, you get to see people from Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood. These include Mr. McFeely (Daniel Krell), president and CEO of The Fred Rogers Company Bill Isler (Enrico Colantoni), and producer Margy (Carmen Cusack). But these people aren’t the main focus. Toy Story has been a favorite movie of mine for as long as I can remember. Watching the story of toys come to life reminds me of childhood and how I used to play with toys. I’m sure I imagine I used to think my toys could come to life when I wasn’t around. I mean, what kid didn’t?
This is part of the charm of the Toy Story movies. The story is relatable to every child and child-at-heart. But that’s not the only thing that makes Toy Story great.
The Toy Story cast is amazing. The cast of Toy Story 4 includes the returning voice actors:
Michigan native Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear
Tom Hanks as the cowboy Woody
Annie Potts as Bo Peep
Joan Cusack as Jessie
Wallace Shawn as Rex
John Ratzenberger as Hamm
Blake Clark as Slinky Dog Read more...
In 2004, The Polar Express movie, based on the 1984 now classic book, was released in a unique 3D animated format based on live action capture. It’s become an annual feature in movie theaters during the holidays – and delightfully some interesting lessons on leadership.
The story is simple. Young children, exemplified by the “Hero Boy,” are drawn to the magical “Polar Express” stopping outside their homes, for a journey to the North Pole. It’s Christmas Eve, and before getting on the train, the story shows how the “Hero Boy” is doubting his belief in Santa Claus.
- Leaders are flexible; they can be firm and sensitive.
On January 15th, 2009, the pilot of US Airways Flight 1549 had a choice to make. Do we try to make it back to LaGuardia, land at Teterboro Airport, or make a crash landing in the Hudson River.
Captain Chelsey Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles made unheard of decision to land the plane in the river.
Sully is the story of Captain Sullenberger and the challenges he faced as he was brought before the National Transportation Safety Board to review his processes and what went wrong.
The pilot of Flight 1549 was grilled and vilified by the those on the board. They felt something could have been done differently.
We don’t know if there was anything else that Sully could have done. He only had 208 seconds from the time the birds hit to the time he safely landed the plane on the Hudson River. Read more...
Bridge Of Spies is the true story of one man who went beyond the call of duty.
After being recruited by the US government to be the lawyer for an accused Russian spy during the Cold War, he becomes an unlikely hero. Once he finished his duties with the Russian spy, he was then recruited by the CIA to bring home a captured pilot being detained in the Soviet Union.
In Bridge Of Spies, Tom Hanks plays James B. Donovan, Mark Rylance plays the Russian spy Rudolf Abel, and Amy Ryan is Mary Donovan. The starring cast is an amazing lineup. And the movie follows suit.
But what truly stood out in Bridge Of Spies were the leadership lessons. They came one after the other. I hope you’re ready to learn and be entertained.
