How Memorizing Quotes Helped Bolster My Leadership

Since I was a freshman in college, I developed a habit that most would find rather unusual. I collected things. It wasn’t your typical collection of stamps, spoons or baseball cards. I’ve been an avid collector of quotes – words spoken or written by leaders who were beyond themselves and left a dent in this universe.

A book full of quotes

As I look in hindsight, many of these quotes have made an indelible impact in my life, shaping my perspective in life.

For instance, Oscar Wilde was known for saying

Be yourself; everyone else is taken.

When I first encountered this quote, it struck a nerve at me. At that time, I was trying to be someone else. In fact, I was trying to imitate someone I highly admired. The more I tried to fabricate my identity based on imitation, the more I felt empty and inauthentic. Wilde’s words were a profound reminder for me to discover my true voice and my unique gifts and talents.

10 Leadership Quotes From Captain America: The Winter Soldier

A Reel Leadership Article

One of my favorite comic book characters, next to Wolverine, has to be Captain America. His story is amazing.

Steve Rogers started off as a scrawny boy who couldn’t cut it in the army, even though he wanted to serve his country. He was recruited for the super-soldier program and became a flying success.

Isn’t this much like our leadership journeys? We’re told we’re not cut out for it, we look for another way, and we become leaders others look up to? Leadership lessons from Captain America: The Winter SoldierLast Friday, Marvel released the newest entry into the Captain America film series, Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

My wife and I decided to make this movie a mini-date night as we both enjoy comic book movies. We were both impressed by the storyline of the movie and the action. It was a great flick and one I’d recommend.

10 Great Leadership Quotes From Nelson Mandela

I was a bit taken aback when I learned Nelson Mandela passed away on December 5th, 2013. The man had become a living legend with what he had gone through.

As happens to every man, death caught up to him. Though he’s passed from this world, he’s left a legacy through his leadership and personal philosophies.

In honor of the life Nelson Mandela lived, I wanted to share 10 leadership quotes attributed to the man.

1. I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.

2. It is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur. You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership.

Learning From Leadership Quotes

One of my favorite things to do is collect quotes that ring true to me. I’ll scribble it down in a notebook, paste it into an email, or post it on my Facebook page. A couple of years ago I discovered Evernote.

Since this time, I’ve amassed an even larger amount of quotes. They’re leadership quotes, personal development quotes, relationship quotes, and more.

I believe we can learn a lot from the quotes of leaders that have come before us. These leaders are full of wisdom. It becomes our responsibility to learn from them.

That’s been a driving force behind the collection of quotes I’ve recorded. Today, I’d like to share what I’ve learned from some of the leadership quotes I’ve saved for myself.
