Don’t Forget To Take Care Of Yourself

The day started off like a normal day or so it seemed. I awoke to my alarm going off. From there, I got dressed, grabbed a quick bite to eat, and spent a relaxing day with Lok. I also tossed in a quick workout on the elliptical. However, partway through the day, I started to feel groggy.

My reading comprehension seemed to wane. My eyes began to blur. And I developed a headache.

Taking care of yourself is important

That’s when I remembered something… I forgot to take care of myself during the day. Other than a Take 5 candy bar (which are oh so delicious), I hadn’t had breakfast or lunch. By the time dinner rolled around, I was hurting.

This all hit me when Pam and I sat down for a dinner at Logan’s Roadhouse. By the time we finished eating, I felt 95% better.  Feeding myself was exactly what I needed… And exactly what I had neglected to do.

3 Ways Your Health (Or Lack Of) Is Hurting Your Leadership

Have you ever looked at a guy like Richard Branson and thought, “How does the guy get it all done?” 400+ companies, World Records, and billions of dollars under management in a single lifetime. Oh, and I forgot something, space exploration. The guy is on another level.

We are entrepreneurs, leaders, and mold-breakers. Although, of the mortal kind. We need every advantage we can get. So, we should probably pay attention when Titans of business and leadership talk about the things that give them their edge.

Here are 3 areas where your (lack of) exercise could be hindering your leadership.

1. Productivity

My Take on the Merrell Trail Glove Barefoot Running Shoe

As I was preparing to improve my level of fitness, I heard a lot of talk about barefoot running shoes. Most of the talk revolved around the Vibram FiveFingers.

I was hesitant to purchase the FiveFingers as I was not fond of their appearance.

Then I heard talk about a new shoe. These shoes were made by Merrell and called the Trail Glove.

The Merrell shoes looked like real shoes. There are no toe slots to slip my toes in. And I felt comfortable wearing them in public.

I have not been disappointed in my choice.

The Trail Gloves were designed with trail runners in mind but still work well on concrete.

Here is what I enjoy about the shoe:

Preparing For My First 5K

I’m excited. In just over three weeks I’ll be running my first 5K. The run I’m participating in is called Run Thru The Rapids in Grand Rapids, MI. This race takes you through a beautiful park and along the Grand River.  The scenery along the course can be breathtaking.

I’ll be honest, I never thought this would be a possibility. Running always came off as painful and exhausting. It has been a long road but I’ve reached the point where I can run more than a 5K. Here are three challenges I had to overcome and how I managed to accomplish it.

Overcoming Shin Splints: When I began, this was a major issue. Five seconds out and my shins felt like that were shattering. After a few days I decided to change what I ran on. I went from running on pavement to trail running. Almost immediately the shin splints stopped and I got to enjoy the beautify of the woods and the enjoyment of a great run.
