Are You Carrying Around Digital Baggage?

Social Media May Be Weighing You Down

As I was sitting with a good friend of mine, Jeff of The Lounging Space, discussing life, love, and faith, we began to talk about baggage. Not the typical baggage you may think of.

We didn’t talk of lost loves. Or the pain of regret. No… We discussed digital baggage.

In today’s world, we’re carrying around Digital Baggage. More than we would like to admit.

What Is Digital Baggage?

Jeff and I came to the conclusion Digital Baggage consists of all of our social media channels. Facebook. YouTube. Twitter. Instagram. Google+, LinkedIn.

Each of these social media channels offers us something great. The opportunity to connect with long lost friends. The chance to stay in touch with new friends. And the ability to sell our wares to our connections.

But these social media channels also offers us something else. Digital Baggage.

Your View Of Friendship Is Skewed

One thousand, eight hundred and thirty-seven. That’s the number of “friends” Facebook tells me that I have.

On one hand, it brings joy to my heart. There are 1,837 people that are connected to me on Facebook.

The other hand feels sadness. A longing for intimate relationships that I don’t get from Facebook.

Friendships aren't what you think

Do you have these conflicting thoughts too? One of glee and happiness. One that makes you feel so joyous because you’re connected to SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many people.

And then reality smacks you upside your head and tells you that you really don’t have as many friends as Facebook tells you you do?

Facebook Has Messed Up The Truth Of Friendship

Something odd has happened over the last 12 years since Facebook was created. Our view of friendship has gone from those we’re close to and morphed into a catch-all term for everyone and anyone we’re acquaintances we’re with.

I’ve Been Using Social Media Wrong. Have you?

I don’t know about you but I don’t claim to be a social media expert. Far from it.

There’s plenty of things I’ve done wrong with social media. You may be doing them too.

I want to be honest today. I’ve been using social media wrong. I’m sorry. I want to change and I want to help you avoid the social media mistakes I’ve made.

Social media is a new beast in the internet world. Sure, it’s a couple of years old but it’s still finding it’s foothold and it’s purpose.

Sites like Xanga and MySpace have come and gone and evolved.

So has Facebook, Twitter, and (the new kid) Google+.

And everyone is trying to figure out how to use social media to the best of their ability.
