Quotes And Leadership Lessons From Ocean’s 8

A Reel Leadership Article

There have been many classic heist films in the history of cinema. Heat, The Bank Job, Baby Driver, Ocean’s 11 and 12 (fun little fact, I viewed Ocean’s 12 at my bachelor party oh so many years ago), and Bonnie And Clyde to name a few.

Heist films are all about a team pulling off an impossible job. They rob a bank, steal a bunch of cars, or knock over a casino. You get to experience the thoughts and actions of a team as they go for the score of a lifetime.

Leadership lessons in Ocean's 8

Ocean’s 8 continues in this vein.

Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) is finally released from prison after five years, eight months, and 12 days for her part in a previous Ocean robbery. Upon her release, she begins to implement a scheme she’s been devising for all those years behind bars.

Find your creative leader identity

Show Notes:

How do you define creativity?

I don’t define creativity in terms of a certain kind of art or skill. That’s a very superficial way of looking at it. It’s much broader than that.

“Creativity” suggests creating, or bringing forth something that is new or fresh. I like to define creativity this way: Doing what you were born to do.

It’s like breathing: you must breathe in (take care of yourself; be healthy; personal growth), but you must also breathe out (serving, being generous, being excellent at your craft. A healthy person is always breathing both in and out.

Why did you choose the theme Awaken The Wonder?

As we age, we begin to lose the wonder we had as children. It’s critical we reclaim this awe and wonder.

As leaders, we get bogged down in the minutia of reality. Digging into wonder brings something special to our leadership.

Why I Stopped Waiting For Inspiration To Strike

There’s something romantic about being a creative. Whether it’s an artist, a musician, or a writer. Everything about the creative process, to those on the outside, seems amazing.

You get to create a masterpiece others can enjoy. You’re sharing a talent you have with the world. You’re able to express yourself. Oh, and you’re always inspired!

Oh, what a crock! I’ve got to tell you that rarely does an inspiring moment hit right when I desire it to.

Knowing this, I had to stop waiting for inspiration to strike.

There’s been stories written about inspiration and how inspiration strikes at just the right moment. I’m not sure I’ve found that to be the case.

Inspiration rarely strikes me when I want it to. I can’t call upon inspiration to bless me with the insights I want to have.

Innovation is a requirement for great leadership. You’re always on the lookout for new ways to move the company forward. You know there’s power in new ideas.

You can even help the company grow and succeed by being innovative.

But what does it take to be innovative as a leader? What can you do to increase the flow of new ideas and new breakthroughs?
