A thought hit me like lightning recently. I lack confidence.
My brain raced through the scenarios where this is true.
I lack confidence in:
Leading effectively
Playing soccer (where this idea really hit home)
Great leaders never stop learning. That’s why great leaders never fail to ask other leaders questions about leadership.
These leaders are hungry. They want to grow. They know they can’t lead by themselves.
So they ask. And ask. Then ask some more.
In my interview with Michael Bungay-Stanier, he brought up a great point about leaders need to be curious to coach well. I believe we can take this to the next level.
Walking into a new organization is a scary prospect. Not because you don’t know what to do. Or even how to do the work.
The scary thing is the question of whether or not your new team will trust you.
Gaining the trust of your team can be the life or death of your leadership.
Moe Glenner, in his book Plus Change, says Trust is the glue in any relationship, personal or professional. Without trust there is no real relationship.
You may know leaders who rush right in and begin making changes. They throw out the old and bring in the new.

I was also a long-time church employee.
I feel like I was born a leader in some ways. I was born an only child, married an only child, and am a parent to an only child.
Leaders can’t lead without followers. That seems like an obvious fact but so many people are missing this. They don’t realize no one is following them.
The other mystery is that those who do realize this conundrum don’t know why people aren’t following them.
You can see the problem there, can’t you? These so-called leaders are stuck doing things but they can’t get others to hop on-board.
Today, let’s look at some issues that cause leaders to lose, or never gain followers.
