10 Bad Leadership Traits You Need To Avoid

Have you ever had a boss that was totally clueless? Never knew what was happening? Or what was the next step to take?

Probably drove you crazy. It’s driven me crazy in the past. He had bad leadership traits.

But reflecting on my own leadership, I know I’ve done things that drove others insane. You probably have too.

It’s an easy thing to overlook. We’re so busy leading and taking care of what needs to be done. Missing the cues that we’ve messed up and created a mess is easy.

We need to be careful of this. If we’re not, we’ll drive our team away.

Beware of these ten leadership failures…

  1. Being arrogant: Not much worse than a leader that is arrogant. Unwilling to compromise and come to an equitable solution. And shouting how great you are to anyone and everyone that will listen. You may be knowledgeable but, remember, there’s always someone better than you.

The Danger of Rules

Imagine coming face to face with a rule that could hurt someone. Maybe even leave someone dead. One that makes you ask “Should I break the rules?” Sometimes the rules are dangerous.

If I’d observed all the rules, I’d never have got anywhere.

Tomas Lopez faced such a rule earlier this week as a lifeguard in Hallandale, FL.

You’re probably asking what happened. If you want to read the full article, you can view it here.

The Rule Breaker

Tomas was in his lifeguard stand when several beachgoers run to the stand. They’re telling him there’s a man drowning and he needs help.

What Do You Do?

You’re at a networking event. Mingling and conversing with people you’ve never met. There are tons of questions to ask. But one that gets asked more than anything.

What do you do?

Without a thought we normally spew out the simple answer. Stating the career we’re in. Or what we do professionally.

And we state it in simplistic terms.

  • I work in IT
  • I’m an accountant
  • I make sales

Is that all that you do? Do you just work in a field?

If you’re anything like me, the answer to the question is a resounding NO.

There’s so much more to you than what you do during your day job.

For example, let’s look at what I do.

My day job is that of an IT professional. Simply put, I make sure the computers at my place of employment are up and running.
